Farewell Ari Up

Arianna Foster, aka Ari Up, frontwoman from one of the most influential bands at late 70´s The Slits, has passed away. She died after a serious illness, according to John Lydon´s site. Mr Lydon was also Ari´s stepfather.

If you don´t own Slits´s furious debut album, Cut, make sure you´ll get it to your collection soonest. It´s a combination of hell-raising, ramshackle punk and reggae rhythms very difficult to imitate.

Ari, rest in peace.

Greatness

Of course, you´ve all seen this already. But, I still want to post it, since it´s so great. One of my all time heroes, British graffiti artist Banksy, did his version of opening theme for one of the best animated TV series ever, The Simpsons by Matt Groening.

Great? Totally!

Festival memories from summer

Yep, summer´s gone now. So, it´s time to share some memories. I never make it to the Coachella Festival, even I wanted to. But, no worries. Sam O´Hare captured the spirit of the festival perfectly.

I love this.

He´s not new here

Some of you might agree with me that Chris Cunningham is one of the best music video directors ever. Good news to all of us who think so. Mr Cunningham is back in the action what comes to the music videos. Or, what do you think about this great piece of film for a one of the best tracks this year – Gil Scott-Heron´s New York Is Killing Me from his first album in 16 years I´m New Here.

Go to Mr Cunningham´s and see the whole flick. It´s hypnotic!

Into the light

Hey guys, sorry I´ve been little lazy to post anything for a while, but I´ve spent lot of time at the movies, since there´s been Helsinki International Film Festival going on from 16th of September. Today, Sunday 26th of September, it´s last day of the festival.

Like every year before I´ve seen bunch of great movies together with the ones you don´t even remember after a few days, or at least you don´t want to remember.

One of my favourites this year was absolutely brilliant Finnish documentary called “Timanttikoirien Vuosi 1984″ (“Helsinki Twilight 1984″).

This film, by Pete Europa, takes us back in time into fascinating period of time between 1979 – 1985, when Helsinki moved towards an increasingly diverse and free social climate, pioneering beautiful boys in make up and fancy girls. During this period, the new street-level phenomena such as small magazines, pirate radio and independent fashion began to blend into the society – new clubs were set up, new art forms were born – and finally people felt they were works of art themselves.

Film is full of interviews of original operators and also has amazing soundtrack with tracks from the period by international acts such as Bauhaus, The Specimen, Kraftwerk, The Lords Of The New Church etc. together with local artists like Jimi Sumén, Musta Paraati, Shadowplay, The Nights Of Iguana, The Pin-Ups, Jay Havanna plus few others.

So, if you´re interested of history of Helsinki Night Life, this documentary is highly recommended.

“Act Da Fool”

Harmony Korine for Proenza Schouler. Nice one. But, do you think their clients get it? …hhhmmm…

The Broadsheet by Hanna Sarén

One of the most interesting Finnish designers of modern times, Helsinki-based Hanna Sarén, did it again. She became even more interesting. Together with her team she launched whole new concept yesterday, The Broadsheet.

The Broadsheet is a new interesting platform for creativity – new designs and content to stockists, press and consumer. There will be Hanna´s new creations and designs almost monthly basis, and new content from her and the team way more often.

Enjoy.
